Educational
There is an increasing range of subjects taught within schools
and colleges, and especially with the greater provision
for special needs students in education, new buildings and facilities
have to be more versatile.
Poor acoustics in learning and teaching spaces was
addressed when schools were brought within the control of the
Building Regulations. Approved Document E now requires that
new or extended schools have to be acoustically designed to comply
with BB93 'The Acoustics of Schools'.
With the expansion in Higher and Further Education continuing,
there is a real need to ensure the new buildings appearing on educational
campuses in the UK are well designed, sustainable and help
encourage students to fulfil their potential in the 21st century.

Bedford
College Arts Centre |

Bedford College wanted to bring together
their drama, art, design, media and music departments into
one new building. Acoustically this meant set construction
workshops close to high quality recording studios. Pottery
kilns potentially next to TV studios. Spectrum worked closely
with the client and the design team to optimise the layout
so that the acoustic results would be good without having
to adopt excessively high cost solutions. Nevertheless
the results incorporate concrete floating floors. Box-in-box
constructions are used for the TV and recording
studios. Sound abortive drapes for adjustable
acoustics in theatre workshops and performance spaces. Diffusers
and bass traps are used in the recording studios along with
non-parallel walls and ceiling for perfect sound.
