Spectrum was formed in 1989 following a management
buyout (MBO) of the six-man external consultancy team within
ICI Acoustics, a division of the UK chemical company ICI.
With the roots of the newly independent group firmly in providing
advice on noise to the oil, chemical, manufacturing and distribution
industries, we soon began to diversify into other industries
including the power and CHP sector, and also the main traditional
areas for acoustic consultants, the building and construction
industry. |

Since that time, the firm has grown in staff numbers and
reputation and operates worldwide out of its main office
in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, just north of London and a
second but smaller office near Wigan, Lancashire. The majority
of founding shareholders are still employed in the firm and
have been joined by both experienced professional staff and
new graduates qualified in either acoustics or mechanical
engineering, sometimes at first degree level, but usually
also with a Masters qualification.
1998 was the first year that acoustic work in the building
and architectural sectors exceeded that in the firms more
traditional industrial markets. Since that time the split
has settled at around 60% of the firm’s work in the
building industry and 40% in engineering, and the business
continues still to grow… |
