Measurement
and Testing
The data acquired from site and laboratories provides
information about how acoustic and vibrating systems perform.
Without real measurement data to validate theoretical predictions
we would have no real knowledge of how effective or accurate
much of our work is. Accurate measurement is also necessary when
it comes to demonstrating compliance with clients’ performance
criteria. Such measurements are an unbiased and fair way
of being able to determine success or failure of a project.
All our measurement and consultancy services are quality assured
to BS EN ISO 9001:2000 and our large range of instrumentation
is subject to a strict external calibration regime traceable
to national and international standards. This is required
in particular for our legal and planning work and also for our
sound insulation testing, where eight of our staff are currently
accredited by the ANC to undertake pre-completion
sound insulation testing within the UK in accordance with the Building Regulations.
We have a very broad measurement capability, including the latest
in top range equipment to measure and analyse noise
and vibration,
seismic events, in-pipe pulsations, and all of this over a full
range of frequencies including the infranoise region <20 Hz
and ultrasonic >20,000Hz. We can also undertake simultaneous
monitoring of meteorological conditions, which is so important
to environmental noise propagation, and we do this using our
own weather station. Supporting these measurement systems
are high performance PC-based analysis packages,
which can operate either within one of our two UK offices, or
on site if immediate results reporting is needed.
Procedures and methods for carrying out measurements are identified
in Spectrum's own Standards library, where we keep up to date
versions of all relevant UK, and many international Standards.
