Vibration is transmitted through solid structures and can affect
people, machines and buildings. This subject is very broad
and is important in a wide range of industries where issues include
annoyance experienced by people at vibration levels close to thresholds
of perception through to major health concerns when people are exposed
to higher vibration levels especially hand-arm vibration hazards
from portable tools.
For buildings, there are issues of superficial and sometimes more
serious structural damage arising through piling and other construction
activities occurring nearby; the level of impact depending upon the
proximity and type of construction equipment.
Vibrational analysis of pipework in the oil and gas industry is
an important part of fatigue analysis and hazard studies. Most
recently it has it has begun to routinely evaluate the risks of catastrophic
failure in their pipework from very high frequency vibration in pipewall
structures caused by exceptionally high in-pipe noise levels (acoustic
fatigue).
